Elon Musk Book Review

Today I've finished Elon Musk Book for Ashley Vance.

Elon Musk Book Review

Elon Musk: Tesla, SpaceX, and the Quest for a Fantastic Future.

I’ve just finished reading this inspiring book that sheds light on the mysterious life of Elon Musk and his companies.

The book is a biography of Elon and shows his business and technology views.

I’ve been fascinated with electric cars since 2008 and at that time I knew about an auto maker startup called Tesla Motors.

My idea about the company at such time is that it was only starting to make electric cars. But what I knew after is that it had already built a successful Roadster model and then started to develop another luxurious model called Model S.

This model could be compared with other luxury cars like McLaren and Aston Martin.

The idea was just magical. Imagine an electric car that can be compared with other powerful traditional cars from giant auto makers.

I then knew about Elon Musk as the mind behind Tesla Motors. Then after that I knew about SpaceX as another ambitious idea that aims to build private rocket launches and make them cheaper.

And then I knew Elon Musk had built the SpaceX even before Tesla Motors.

The more I knew about the guy, the more I’m surprised.

I knew that he was the one who first introduced the idea of internet banking through PayPal.

The idea was totally intriguing.

How could a man make a company that he has sold for billions of dollars and then take all that money and put it in another companies aiming to create extraordinary products?

What I knew after reading the book was amazing.

I knew that he has established two companies before Tesla Motors and SpaceX.

One of them was the internet directory called Zip2. And the other was the first internet banking service called X.com which later became PayPal.
The book gets you to Elon’s personal life and how it affected him since he has been a child and his grandparents even before he was born.

And all what I’ve learned was priceless.

The most important asset in life is time. How you manage your time is how you manage your life.

Don’t let time stealers take your life from you. He always had that feeling of time as a valuable asset and how it translates to money on both the short run and on the long run.

He has always been giving promises to deliver his products such as the first electric car form his company and the first rocket launch but he failed to deliver them on time.

He has always been so optimistic of what he and his teams could do.

He has achieved all what he promised even later.

He had the best skill to select talented people to join his teams.

I’ve learned that you need to follow your dream in order to be happy.

It doesn’t matter what people think about you. Only that matters is how you see yourself.

Most people cannot understand or believe what you can do. So don’t get them get into your mind. It’s how you see the problem and how you see the solution.

I’ve learned that you need to focus on your goals even whatever happens to you.

He has suffered with his businesses, with his children and with his personal life.

But he could manage to stay focused during all those circumstances with his eyes on the final outcome.

Most of his friends and employees see that one of his best virtues is his ability to stay focused even in the hardest times.

I’ve learned that all that could happen to you in life can become to your benefit at the end.

Even he had this hard life with his father and at the school; this life style is what has made him what he is.

He even wants his kids to suffer just a little bit to become strong as he is.

I’ve seen something I thought from a long time ago that life can be more thrilling than fiction.

In general, the book is so much fun to read, inspiring and you get that feeling as if you are reading a thriller.

How could SpaceX surpass NASA?

This is really mind boggling.

How SpaceX could surpass NASA?

SpaceX was a new company that started in 2002 with no previous experience in space rockets.

SpaceX CEO and founder Elon Musk has his experience in software and internet business.

His first two companies Zip2 and X.com(later PayPal) with the first made an early version of internet directory of restaurants and other businesses.

And the second one which made the new leap for banking and money transfer from the real world to the digital world.

X.com which later became PayPal has made the first internet banking system in which you could send and receive money just as easy as you send and receive emails.

But what about rocket launching business?

Elon Musk didn’t have any experience in machinery or rockets before. Then how he came to be the CEO of one of the modern space private companies?

There is a certain alliance between NASA and SpaceX. That is obvious in contracts of space launches NASA made with SpaceX to deliver people and payloads to the ISS.

But what SpaceX has made through the last decade has radically changed what NASA and other space agents and companies in the space industry since the 1970's.

SpaceX has made space lunches less expensive than all agencies, government contractors and private companies.

SpaceX has made the first reusable space rocket that returns to earth on a specific location and not to be lost in space or thrown into the ocean.

SpaceX has changed technology standards in space industry without compromising safety margins or reliability.

So what’s the secret formula for this?

What I came to know from Elon Musk book is some important factors.

Motivation:
Since he has been a child, Elon Musk had early passion to space exploration and desire to save humanity from extinction. He truly is passion motivated since his early days when he taught himself coding and other scientific subjects.

Deliberate practice:
SpaceX is best known as a healthy working environment of making, sharing ideas between different levels of personnel, and testing to get immediate results. This process of action reward makes learning more efficient and improves abilities of making technical decisions.

Best people:
SpaceX has always been choosing people form best of the best to create the future of space flights. Not only people with higher grades at schools but also people with high sense of leadership and the ability to actually create thing from the scratch are the kind of people SpaceX is always searching for to hire.

Efficiency:
It makes better to make less people involved in one project and this is SpaceX policy to use the minimum number of people to reduce troubles of communications and meetings. So for SpaceX it’s better to hire one employee to work for 16 hours alone than to hire two employees to work for 8 hours each.

Open minded way of thinking that for example made people at SpaceX use off the shelf electronics in their devices instead of space grade electronics knowing that consumer electronics has reached far better grades that can be as good as space grade electronics.

Fast and better decision making process in making some changes at the last minutes to launch which is something people in large aerospace companies aren’t used to.

How could bullies kids contribute to save human species

Kids acting as bullies can have bad effects on other kids who have to interact with them.

But how could bullies be the reason for a man to start an ambitious plan to transform human kind into a multi-planetary species?

In all his interviews about his childhood, Elon Musk has mentioned how he had a hard childhood and how he has been bullied by kids in school.

He suffered from them and had to live lonely in his childhood. Once they had beaten him that he had to stay at home for long time.

And they also bullied Elon’s friends so they stay away from him.

What I could conclude from these events that they had deep impact on Elon’s personality and behavior.

He tried to spend more time lonely and then tried to escape to reading science and fiction.

He had to escaping form painful reality by using this mechanism of loneliness and indulging in scientific literature.

Those events sure have left their prints on Elon’s self. This is another proof of my theory about how bad situations can lead to great ones.

I guess the coup against him in 2001 that lead to take away PayPal from him has its echoes of that bully behavior he suffered from as a child.

The guy didn’t rest even when he has made millions of dollars from his first two Silicon Valley startups, Zip2 and PayPal.

Instead he had his old dream to explore the space and to save humanity from facing extinction living on one planet.

He started to build SpaceX and creating new cheap rockets from ground up to make space flight easier.

This could make a great difference in future of humanity.

For myself, experience with people tried to hurt me had been very enriching.

When you think of it, you just cannot stay at your home and figure out how you could solve your problems or how to deal with bad guys.

Instead, this is something you've got to work for and need to learn in field of action.

Facing your fears might be the best way to conquer them.

It doesn’t matters what happens in our world, but what matters how we react to it.

There might be some good situations that lead to bad eventual results and on the contrary, some bad reasons might result in great outcomes.

One man’s vision that can change the world

Have you ever saw something in a different way than others could see it?

If one man has a vision so he can see something that no one else can see, he sure can make a change in his life and in lives of millions of people.

John Kennedy has see that America can go to the moon in less than a decade and he made gathered all effort to make his vision a reality.

Now when I read Elon Musk book I find something similar. Elon is a man who has that kind of vision.

He is that type of person that can see things in a different way than others can see them.

When he started his first startup, Zip2 he had a vision that the internet is becoming so important that all businesses will need to have presence on the web.

Even before anyone could imagine it, he saw that, believed it and draws his effort to make it real.

And then when he wanted to start his second startup X.com which would then been named PayPal he saw internet banking as a real fact when no one else thought it could be.

What had made me think of it is his attitude when he wanted to start his third company SpaceX. Imagine a person who wants to make his own rockets to fly in own spaceships to send people and stuff to the space.

At that time all people thought that he was just a crazy guy who had millions of dollars and wanted to spend them in the most irrational way.

But what has really happened was all because of his vision. He could see his ideas so vividly that he could convince people to work with him to make his dream come true.

He ignited motivation of young and veteran aeronautics engineers to take the risk to make this crazy idea a reality.

By making his own army of engineers, scientists and sales persons he could do it.

All that has happened before even the launch his first rocket Falcon One.

If you have a vision, then you can change the world.

When you have the vision you feel resourceful. And resourcefulness is the ultimate resource.

The Freedom Dilemma

Freedom, it’s our ultimate goal for a happy life. Isn’t it?

We all look for freedom in our lives and our work.

We all fight to get our freedom. We struggle when we feel that someone is taking it away from us.

But what happens when we are given our ultimate freedom?

Some people find themselves went out of the leash when they are given their freedom.

Is it part of the human nature? Is it normal that people cannot live with some degree of slavery or freedom deprivation?

Access control devices, attendance sheets and work orders are all means of human behavior control in different work environments.

If the human is left without supervision under complete freedom something would go wrong for most of the people.

That’s why the majority of the population cannot work as freelancers or as entrepreneurs. Self-discipline is the most important factor in human development.

You can see it in employees and in yourself. You may want to have a vacation and just cant. You have a long to-do list.

But when you take that vacation you just don’t finish them. The vacation is wasted on TV or in unproductive ways.

Most of the people would prefer to be an employee not because they are not entrepreneurs nor because of the job stability.

They prefer the 9 to 5 job only because they don’t know what to do if they left alone without a boss to tell them how to spend their day.

Before looking for your freedom you should know what you can do with it. You should know what you want in your life and how you want to spend your time doing.

Think of a guy like Elon Musk.

He has grown up as if he exactly has known what he wanted to do. Even that he had made some studies, jobs and owned businesses that relate to many categories. But I guess his main goal has been fixed on one or two things.

He wanted to make a change in the world. And he wanted to save humanity in his form of thinking.

Can you have this form of self-discipline of you are given such form of freedom?
Are you able to work for yourself better or even the same way you work for others?

If you are writing a book or working on one project of yours, can you have that persistence to work on it every day for a whole month in a row without any exception?

It only comes with practice. Just as you train your muscles, your brain is trained by daily and continuous habits.

Also decision making and self-discipline can be viewed as a muscle that must be trained to grow.

The fresh graduate or a newbie in a company grows good work habits in work that can make him a good employee.

Waking up early, going to work on time, listening to his boss, finishing his work as scheduled are all good habits that he likes to grow as he starts his new job.

If you are a freelancer or an entrepreneur you must work on growing good daily habits in yourself.
